Erich Kästner's novel is a love story between a young Berliner, passionate about art, and an Austrian countess posing as a servant. At the Salzburg Festival, they are tasked with overseeing a wealthy American couple. However, the couple discovers their secret, but chooses not to say anything. This leads to misunderstandings and comedic situations.
