🗓 Friday, November 22nd

🕒 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM EST

📍 Exhibitor Workshop Room #7, Exhibit Halls CDE

Participants learn about the significance of vocabulary selection for language learning. After sharing theoretical insights, presenters showcase their vocabulary work for the second edition of Impuls Deutsch, highlighting interdisciplinarity, diversity, and community building. They discuss the relationships between these areas and vocabulary and introduce their goals and processes: from analysis of words used to choosing significant and useful vocabulary. Participants are gaining hands-on experience in vocabulary selection by evaluating and comparing texts and activities.

This session addresses diversity and representation in the German World Language classroom. We’ll explore the modern German-speaking world and how to create authentic representations so students see their place in it while reflecting on their own communities. Examples from the forthcoming series DAS REPORTERTEAM will showcase a pathway for integrating multicultural representations within a communicative teaching approach.

More Than Rules: Teaching Grammar
in Context

🗣 Joshua Cabral, French and Spanish teacher at Tower School, podcast host and WL consultant at World Language Classroom

🗓 Saturday, November 23rd

🕒 8:15 AM – 9:00 AM EST

📍 Exhibitor Workshop Room #7, Exhibit Halls CDE

Discover how to move beyond isolated grammar instruction by integrating grammar into meaningful tasks focused on authentic communication. This workshop will guide you through balancing implicit and explicit grammar teaching, designing lessons with communicative objectives at the forefront. We will look at strategies such as the PACE Model and Structured Input as effective ways to create engaging, context-rich lessons that empower students to uncover grammatical patterns and structures in context.

Building Confidence and Accuracy
in AP Spanish

🗣 Caroline Schlegel, Spanish teacher at Frederick County Public Schools, and Aubrey Swisher, Spanish teacher at Washington County Public Schools

🗓 Saturday, November 23rd

🕒 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM EST

📍 Exhibitor Workshop Room #7, Exhibit Halls CDE

The AP Spanish exam vocabulary challenges include advanced, context-specific terms, regional vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and false cognates, which require a deep understanding of word meanings and nuances. This makes comprehension difficult, even for those students with strong language skills. In this session, we delve into advanced vocabulary learning strategies to help students
overcome these challenges. Instead of focusing on isolated word lists, we’ll emphasize word chunks, collocations, connotative meanings, personal associations, and strategic memory retention.
