Alignment to ACTFL & California Standards
Klett World Languages programs under LAUSD review are aligned with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the 2019 California World Language and Cultures Standards. The correlations demonstrate how each program supports measurable proficiency growth across the Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational modes, connects unit goals to ACTFL Can-Do statements, and addresses California expectations for communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.
These documents provide program-level evidence of progression from Novice to Advanced, alignment of performance tasks and assessments, and support for LAUSD priorities such as Academic Discourse, progress monitoring, and pathways to biliteracy.

Supporting LAUSD Priorities
Academic Discourse – Aligned with MMED Priorities
LAUSD has identified Academic Discourse as a major focus for the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department. The programs provided for review are designed to support that priority by engaging students in language use that reflects the communicative demands of school and community contexts.
Within the materials LAUSD will review, educators will find:
- Tasks that require students to explain, compare, justify, and present ideas
- Structured opportunities for collaborative discussion
- Supports that enable all learners to participate in academic conversations
- Rubrics that connect language use to proficiency expectations
This design allows reviewers to see how students move beyond practice to meaningful academic communication.
Comprehension as the Entry Point to Communication
Consistent with LAUSD’s emphasis on learning that grows from understanding, the programs begin with listening and reading input and guide students toward interaction and expression.
The review environment demonstrates:
- Sequences that progress from interpretive comprehension → guided interaction → independent communication
- Activities that build confidence before production
- Digital tools that allow students to practice speaking with immediate feedback
This structure reflects an instructional pathway that starts with input and leads to purposeful output.
Progress Monitoring for District Decision-Making
LAUSD requires a clear explanation of how student progress is tracked and reported over time. Through The KWL Hub, the district can review:
- Evidence of growth across Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational modes
- Standards-based results connected to unit goals
- Class and student reports that support instructional planning
These features enable LAUSD reviewers to assess how the programs provide actionable data to teachers and leaders.
Pathways to Biliteracy and the State Seal
The district’s focus on the trajectory from TK–8 Promise/Pathway to Biliteracy to the California State Seal of Biliteracy is reflected in the design of the materials provided for review.
Across the programs, LAUSD will be able to examine how they:
- Build proficiency progressively across articulated levels
- Strengthen cross-linguistic awareness
- Prepare students for the communicative demands of the Seal
- Connect classroom learning to long-term biliteracy goals
This alignment is intended to support LAUSD’s vision of developing biliterate, multicultural graduates.
