About IMPULS DEUTSCH Second Edition

IMPULS DEUTSCH is an innovative, two-level German program for students at the introductory and intermediate levels. The second edition of this bestselling program has been specifically adapted to respond to the needs of students and professors of German across North America.

This series continues to empower students to communicate and collaborate in German from the very beginning while providing instructors with dynamic yet flexible instructional material.

Why IMPULS DEUTSCH?

  • A curriculum for all students: IMPULS DEUTSCH presents a a multifaceted view of modern German-speaking countries, ensuring students feel represented.
  • Student-centered learning: The flipped classroom approach allows students to take charge of their learning, working at their own pace and developing learning strategies. Grammar explanations and 130 Interactive Grammar Videos are provided in English to further support learner autonomy.
  • Flexibility: The textbook includes 16 chapters across the two volumes, four per semester, with each unit presented on a double-page spread to simplify lesson planning. Optional Vertiefungeinheiten units reinforce grammar while exploring new material, offering instructors flexible pacing. Easily identifiable by colored banners, these units can be included or omitted to suit any syllabus, offering instructors flexible pacing.

  • Frequency-Based Vocabulary: Vocabulary selection is guided by frequency studies (e.g. Tschirner & Möhrig, 2019), focusing on practical, high-use words from the start, aligning with an interdisciplinary and professional approach.

Program Organization

In the second edition of IMPULS DEUTSCH, we have streamlined the format of the LERNEN and ZEIGEN components to support the flipped classroom model. Previously, these components were combined in a single print workbook, while available online as two separate parts under one title. Now, they are exclusively available as distinct online books, each with its own title, making it easier for students to engage in each stage of learning—whether they are preparing for class or reflecting afterward.

  • Before-Class Book LERNEN, now a dedicated online component available exclusively on The KWL Hub, allows students to independently explore key grammatical structures and core concepts at their own pace. Through rich input and interactive study, students build essential background knowledge, fully preparing them for meaningful in-class interactions.
  • In-Class Book MACHEN continues to be a monolingual resource focused on interaction, communication, and project-based learning, encouraging collaboration in class. Each double-page unit is designed for a 50-minute session and is available in both print and online versions, with integrated audio and video.
  • After-Class Book ZEIGEN, now fully online and available exclusively on The KWL Hub, guides students through self-assessment, critical reflection, and expressive activities, allowing them to consolidate and showcase their learning.

This updated structure enhances flexibility and accessibility for students, aligning with modern educational practices to foster autonomous, engaged learning in the target language.

The Instructor's Edition

The Annotated Instructor’s Edition, available exclusively on our new learning platform The KWL Hub, offers a detailed introduction to the series and methodology, along with practical teaching suggestions, answer keys, and tips. Instructors assist in building intercultural competence by developing the ability to engage in German with important topics faced by both the USA and the D-A-CH-L countries. 

NEW in the second edition

  • Over 30% of new and revised activities. 
  • The second half of IMPULS DEUTSCH 1 now begins with a new warm-up week with four review units.
  • IMPULS DEUTSCH 2 was reimagined as a book with two distinct and independent sequences: ID2 ORANGE and ID2 BLAU. Both sequences introduce grammar and vocabulary over four chapters —two for new material and two for review— allowing instructors to start with either sequence based on student and program needs. This spread-out approach is ideal for programs that can’t offer separate classes for each level every semester, letting students complete either sequence in any order.
  • Enhanced frequency-based vocabulary approach emphasizing practical and meaningful vocabulary:
    ○ Green words: Among the 1,000 most frequently used German words.
    ○ Black words: Among the 2,000 most frequently used German words.
  • Grammar is reduced and spread out more evenly throughout the chapters and is now included in MACHEN. Previously, grammar was only available in LERNEN. Now, the text summaries are printed in MACHEN, giving students a permanent reference even after their online access expires.
  • Featuring 130 Interactive Grammar Videos (over ten hours across the textbook series) in Before-Class Book LERNEN. Our set of diverse “Grammar instructors” will guide your students through the grammar using real-life situations and integrated activities, enhancing the flipped classroom concept and getting them ready for applying the grammar in communicative classroom activities.
  • Triple the amount of audio materials, including three audio readings for all written texts featuring different language variations, regional accents and a broader representation of German speakers.
  • Brand-new online platform The KWL Hub, featuring improved accessibility such as closed captions for all videos.

IMPULS DEUTSCH breaks from traditional vocabulary lists and prioritizes highfrequency words essential for authentic communication. High frequency vocabulary terms are highlighted in the vocabulary lists, so students can instantly see the importance of the words they are learning. This approach builds a solid foundation, supporting students as they advance to higher-level courses, study abroad programs, and even internships in German-speaking countries.
Modern, Inclusive Content and Images
The second edition of IMPULS DEUTSCH offers updated, inclusive content and images that reflect contemporary German-speaking cultures, fostering cultural awareness and relevance.
Immersive Audio with Diverse Voices
IMPULS DEUTSCH now includes three distinct audio readings for each text in In-Class Book MACHEN, enriching students' exposure to varied German dialects and voices. With expanded audio input featuring over 30 unique voices —including regional accents and diverse backgrounds—students build real-world listening skills, preparing them for authentic conversations and immersing them in the rich diversity of German-speaking regions, such as such as Austria and Switzerland.
Consistent Grammar That Flows Naturally
Understanding grammar is critical for language learners, and the second edition of IMPULS DEUTSCH balances grammar lessons across each chapter. Concepts are introduced and reviewed gradually, allowing students to absorb the material at a comfortable pace and experience a more cohesive learning journey.
Interactive Grammar Videos for an Engaging Experience
With over 130 grammar videos and a total runtime of over ten hours across the textbook series, students can explore German grammar through interactive and real-life scenarios on The KWL Hub. These videos are hosted by a diverse set of instructors, adding depth and accessibility to grammar learning.

The Before-Class Book LERNEN and AfterClass Book ZEIGEN are now exclusively online on The KWL Hub, offering new homework and grading tools, greater accessibility, and regular updates with current events and cultural insights to keep learning engaging.

The KWL Hub

The KWL Hub enhances teaching and learning with digital resources for IMPULS DEUTSCH. It exclusively hosts LERNEN, ZEIGEN, MACHEN, Interactive Grammar Videos, and the Annotated Instructor’s Edition. The enhanced MACHEN eBook includes integrated audio and video. Students can prepare, practice, and explore course content while developing writing, intercultural competence, and pronunciation skills, submitting work for instructor feedback. Instructors can assign activities, set deadlines, and provide detailed feedback.
